포르투갈 모라의 오래된 기차역이 거석 박물관으로 변신한 이색 공간

오래된 기차역에서 거석 박물관으로 화려한 변신, 포르투갈 모라의 메갈리틱 뮤지엄(Megalithic Museum)… 철도역 독의 선형성을 닮은 갤러리 영역과 새로운 건물 군을 통합하는 기하학적인 메탈릭 패널이 연출하는 신비로운 공간미

포르투갈 모라 도심에 위치한 거석 박물관은 미래공원과 인접해 있다. 모라 지역은 예로부터 유럽의 거석문화를 대표하는 고고학적 발견지로 잘 알려져 있는 곳이다. 유럽의 거석군은 대서양 동쪽 해안과 지중해 연안을 따라 길게 분포되어 있고 프랑스는 물론 포르투갈과 스페인, 영국과 아일랜드에 이르기까지 넓게 퍼져있다.

전 세계에 걸쳐 널리 발견되는 거석문화는 돌을 이용한 선사시대의 기념적인 구조물이나 거석무덤을 총칭하여 일컫는다. 제법 큰 돌을 이용한 고인돌이나 선돌에서부터 작은 돌을 이용한 돌널무덤과 돌무지무덤이 이에 해당한다.

박물관은 모라 마을의 상징적인 건물인 오래된 기차역을 리모델링한 것이다. 기차역은 지역 주민들의 삶의 공간으로 오랫동안 집단 기억에 깊숙이 뿌리를 내려온 곳이다. 이러한 개념적 인식 하에 설계를 맡은 CVDB건축은 기존 건축물의 가치를 인정하고 신중한 보수 작업을 전개한다. 기차역에서 탈바꿈한 뮤지엄 공간의 특성이 잘 드러나듯 여러 개의 크고 작은 박공형으로 조합된 건물 매스들이 길게 철길을 따라 늘어서 있어 사뭇 묘한 분위기를 연출한다.

기존의 건물인 오래된 기차역과 창고, 2개의 신축 건물이 한데 엮어져 박물관 단지를 구성한다. 새롭게 지어진 건물은 전시 공간의 서쪽과 동쪽 카페테리아에 마련되어 있다.

4개의 건물은 사이트의 북쪽을 따라 연속적으로 전개되는 옥외 갤러리를 통해 연결된다. 그 중 건물의 핵심 영역인 갤러리는 철도역 독(dock)의 선형성을 닮아 있다. 직방형의 평면에 걸쳐 크게 4개의 존으로 나누어진 갤러리 내부는 가늘고 긴 목재 레이어를 적층하고 전시 영역을 곡면으로 처리함으로써 춤을 추듯 율동성 있는 공간미를 자아낸다. 갤러리는 단지 전체를 개념적으로 묶어주는 동시에 다른 프로그램과의 순환성을 이끌어주는 공간으로 작용한다.

건물의 주요 출입은 도서관과 IT룸, 관리 사무실뿐만 아니라 구 기차역의 건물을 통해 가능하다. 기존의 창고는 교육 워크숍을 위한 다목적 오픈 스페이스로 세련되게 변모했다. 갤러리 영역과 새롭게 들어선 건물의 동선을 하나로 이어주는 화이트 메탈릭 패널은 천장과 벽체에 기하학적 도형 패턴이 반영되어 있어 사뭇 신비로움을 자아낸다. 이를 통해 자칫 밋밋하게 보일 수 있는 메갈리틱 건물 군은 밤과 낮으로 묘한 빛을 머금고 주변을 은은하게 빛내고 있다.

메갈리틱 뮤지엄의 공간 속에는 지역을 기반으로 한 마을의 유산의 가치를 인정하고 오랫동안 유지시키고자 하는 건축가의 지혜로운 디자인 언어가 깃들어 있기에 더욱 힘 있게 다가온다. ANN

He has a Masters from the Bartlett, University College London, where he currently is an external examiner. He worked in Lisbon, London and in Macau with Manuel Vicente. He has taught and lectured in schools in Hong Kong, in Europe. He was Cass Gilbert Professor at CALA and CDes, University of Minnesota, in 2002 and 2006. He was also the Ralph Hawkins Professor at the School of Architecture, University of Texas, Arlington, in 2007. He taught design studio from 1997 to 2001 at the Faculdade de Arquitectura(FA-UTL) before becoming the director of the school of Architecture at Dalhousie University, in Halifax Canada. >>Tiago Filipe Santos has been developing projects as an associate since 2009. He has collaborated with CVDB since 2003. He has an Arch Dip from the Faculdade de Arquitectura of the Universidade de Lisboa where he received the Prize Comendador Joaquim Matias for best Architectural Projects in the closing year*2006). He has a Post Graduate Advanced Diploma in Construction from Instututo Superior Tecnico fo the Universidade de Lisboa(2008). He has received several competition prizes and his projects have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers.
